WELCOME TO TOWN REVEREND… GO PACKERS!

Ordination is a pretty big deal in the life of a minister or a church. And the fact that Dublin Community Church is ordaining one of our own, Scott Schieber, is a day to celebrate.  A year ago we installed Pastor Lisa Bowersock as our Licensed Associate Minister, and 20 years ago we ordained The Reverend Donna Neidhart.

Every few years, when I rearrange and feng-shui my office, a bulletin from my ordination re-surfaces. It was 30 years ago this past September that I was ordained in Lima. It was held in my home church; a church that my family had been a part of for four generations. My brother Keith, an ordained UCC minister, and a married clergy couple whom I knew from Berkeley were a part of the service. The retired minister who confirmed me and officiated at my wedding was there also.

I recall it in a sort of haze. We had just returned from Berkeley and had a two-month old daughter who had been baptized that morning in the church.  We were moving the next day to Wisconsin to become an Associate Minister in Kiel. Upon arriving in Kiel, I don’t recall having an official Installation ceremony. I was given a warm welcome on my first Sunday and then everyone went home to eat brats and watch the Packers on TV.

My second ministry was in Metaline Falls, Washington. This little mountain town had three churches. One Catholic. One Fundamentalist. And the UCC. We seemed to get along quite well. I recall having the Catholic Priest and the minister from the other Protestant church at the installation. I invited the “nearby” UCC ministers also. Those “nearby” UCC ministers were from towns, 60, 65, 75 and 90 miles away. The term “nearby” is rather expansive in Eastern Washington.

Like men and women in the military; clergy tend to drift around the country (and world). You can follow their career trajectory by noting where their kids were born and their adult kids then married and settled down. In between there are ordinations and installations and leavings and retirings. Celebrations great and small. Yet each is significant.

Peace, Rev. Bob Tussing
