Weekly e-Gram for members and friends of Dublin Community Church

BC 2/4

The reason we will meet is pretty simple:

  1. I like the group.
  2. The group has expressed interest in meeting on a regular basis.

I’m talking about the Breakfast Club 2/4 for 9th-12th graders, which will finally get underway on October 27 at 8:30 am.

I am not certain if this BC 2/4 will bring dozens of kids to Christ or turn them around so that they dedicate their lives to serve the church or nation. I suspect it will be attended and wondered about as to why we must meet on Sunday morning from 8:30-10 am.

I think I’ll tell the kids that when I was their age I had to walk to school barefoot, in the snow, and so 8:30 am doesn’t sound that tough to me. But times are different. I am aware that many are in band, which has endless competitions on Saturdays and they return to the school late on Saturday night. Many are in travelling soccer (field hockey, football, cross country, tennis or luge training) and go to Cincy, Indianapolis or Tulsa at the drop of a hat.

I do not envy the travel schedule of parents today. It’s wonderful that the schools offer academics, sports, clubs, Young Life. Good luck meeting yourself coming and going while transporting your kids. Marty and I did the same when we had school kids at home. It was hectic but it was and is worth it.

We have a good Youth Fellowship group here at church but we have agreed that a simple sit-down group that meets twice a month on various topics is another way to instill some sense of the Christian message to your kids. They are getting plenty of messages from their sports and peers and the media; it could not hurt to have few hours with the minister as we discuss the big topics of Life and Death and Rock Stars and Sacred Places.

It’s good for me too. I like being around these kids; you’ve done a great job parents, by providing them with every opportunity! So, now we offer to you and your kids, the opportunity to stay connected with the church, each other, the minister and adult leader, Amy Ladu.

First topic: the Holocaust and some righteous Gentiles who saved a few or a few hundred from the gas chambers. It’s a big topic and will take 4 sessions. (Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel, Nicholas Winton…ever heard of them??) Come January we’ll listen to a Rock Star who didn’t even know he was bigger than Elvis in another country. He was working construction in Detroit when his world exploded for the better.

We won't change your kids’ world in two ninety-minute sessions per month between now and next June…but you never know.

Peace, Rev. Bob Tussing
